Striker up for 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year award
Fernando Torres was named in a 23-strong list for the 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year title. A shortlist containing the name of three players will be revealed in December, with the eventual winner announced at a ceremony in Zurich on January 12.
The first winner of the award was German captain Lothar Matthaeus. Other players who have collected the award are Marco Van Basten, Roberto Baggio and Zinedine Zidane. Last year, AC Milan’s Kaka received the most number of votes from national captains and coaches to lift the 2007 FIFA World Player of the Year title.
